Flowers and things go on show here
Two members of Worthing Atelier Art Group,
Barbara Lockett and Bill Denman, with
Priscilla Balfour, are showing their paintings and drawings at
Batworth Park House, near Arundel, until July 23rd.
Bill Denman's wash drawing, 'The Chess Game' is well observed and graphically
conveyed, and he shows several sensitive nude drawings,
one of which I much prefer to the subsequent paintings in which
the poor model's flesh tones looked pinkishly overcooked.
His sketch of 'Tarring High Street' is lively, as is the one sketch
'Sonderby Kynaes', and 'The Artist at Easel' is well composed
and effective in conception.

HAVE-A-GO IN HIS PAINTING
Mr. W. Denman of the Atelier Art Group, is now showing his
paintings in the Connaught Theatre's restaurant until March 27th.
His work has a lively quality of vision, and he is certainly not afraid
to experiment both in his technical means, and his
approach to his selected subject matter.
In the pleasing Oil 'Cranes, Shoreham' he exploits the Impressionist approach
to the rendering of light and colour, and produces a shimmering quality
that is most effective,
whilst in 'Nude Pattern', he carefully explores each twist and
turn of plane and muscle in the bent back of the model.
In the 'Sunflower' - a much painted theme I have noticed -
he builds up a powerful series of rhythmical forms in space.
A picture I particularly liked was his 'Hay Bales',
with its composition based upon an X of line directions,
and painted in an unusual colour scheme for such a subject
but nevertheless very effectively done.
Of the slighter sketches I thought the oil pastel of 'Tarring High Street'
was rather fun - Carried out with a nice sense of 'Let's have a go !'
